Lithium–ion (Li–ion) batteries have become ubiquitous, found in power source for mobile electronic devices, power tools, electric vehicles and medical equipment. Although lithium dominates the battery market, it could be facing supply challenges in the near future. On the other hand, aluminium (Al) and sulphur (S) are available in abundance. The EU-funded AMAPOLA project is optimising the technology for flexible Al/S-based batteries, exploiting novel inexpensive polymer gel electrolytes with very high conductivity. The goal is to enable greater energy storage capabilities compared to Li–ion batteries at a lower price for selected markets including transport and aerospace.
